BASIL Virtual Mentorship Initiative
Terms & Conditions
Effective 17 June 2026
Overview
These Terms and Conditions govern participation in the BASIL Virtual Mentorship Program, an initiative of the Blacks of the American Society of International Law (BASIL), a task force of the American Society of International Law (ASIL), operated in collaboration with Konseye: The Mentorship Network, an initiative of Amaryllis Sage LLC.
By registering as a participant, whether as a mentor or a mentee, you agree to these Terms and Conditions in full. Please read them carefully before registering.
1. About the Program
The BASIL Virtual Mentorship Program connects law students and early-career professionals with experienced practitioners in international law through small-group virtual mentoring sessions and themed events. The program exists to expand access, build community, and open pathways into international law for Black students and early-career professionals around the world.
The program is administered by Konseye: The Mentorship Network on behalf of BASIL. When you register, book a session, or interact with program operations, you are engaging with the Konseye team acting on BASIL's behalf. Strategic direction for the program remains with BASIL leadership through the Subcommittee on Mentorship.
2. Eligibility
To participate in the BASIL Virtual Mentorship Program, you must:
-
Be 18 years of age or older
-
Be a current law student, early-career legal professional, or practicing lawyer, jurist, academic, or professional in a related field depending on whether you are joining as a mentee or a mentor
-
Agree to and uphold these Terms and Conditions
-
Comply with all applicable local and national laws
-
BASIL reserves the right to determine eligibility on a case-by-case basis and to decline or cancel registrations at its discretion.
3. Participant Responsibilities
All participants — mentors and mentees alike — are expected to engage in good faith, to honor the commitments they make, and to contribute to a community grounded in respect, generosity, and shared purpose.
Mentors agree to:
-
Share their knowledge and experience honestly and thoughtfully
-
Respect the confidentiality and privacy of mentees
-
Not use the program to solicit business, recruit employees, or advance personal commercial interests
-
Notify program administrators in advance if they are unable to attend a scheduled session
Mentees agree to:
-
Come prepared to sessions with thoughtful questions and an open mind
-
Respect the time and expertise of mentors
-
Not use session time to solicit personal favors, employment references, or introductions outside the spirit of the program
-
Notify program administrators in advance if they are unable to attend a scheduled session
By registering, all participants confirm that the information they provide is accurate and that they will not misrepresent their identity or credentials.
4. Confidentiality
What is shared in sessions stays in sessions. Participants are expected to treat personal experiences, career stories, and professional information shared during mentoring sessions as confidential.
You may not record sessions, share session content publicly, or attribute statements made during sessions to named individuals without their express consent.
This expectation goes both ways. Mentors and mentees should feel free to speak candidly — and that candor depends on trust.
5. Community Standards
The BASIL Virtual Mentorship Program is a space built on respect. Every participant — regardless of background, career stage, or region — deserves to feel welcome, safe, and valued.
The following conduct is prohibited in all program contexts, including virtual sessions, communications with program staff, and any associated platforms or forums:
-
Harassment, bullying, intimidation, or threatening behavior of any kind
-
Discrimination or derogatory conduct on the basis of race, ethnicity, gender, age, disability, sexual orientation, religion, national origin, or any other characteristic
-
Sharing false, misleading, or defamatory content about another participant
-
Impersonating another person, or misrepresenting your identity or credentials
-
Sending unsolicited commercial messages or promotional content to other participants
-
Sharing content that is sexually explicit, obscene, or otherwise inappropriate
-
Violating the privacy of another participant, including sharing their personal or confidential information without consent
-
Any conduct that undermines the safety, integrity, or spirit of the community
These standards apply to all interactions within the program. Participants who do not meet them will be subject to action by program administrators, up to and including permanent removal from the program.
6. Intellectual Property
Materials shared during sessions — including slides, documents, and resources provided by mentors — remain the intellectual property of the person who created them. Participants may not reproduce, distribute, or use such materials outside the program without express written permission from the creator.
By participating in the program, you grant BASIL and Konseye a limited, non-exclusive right to reference your participation in general program communications — for example, in reports on the program's reach and impact. We will never identify you by name in public-facing materials without your explicit consent.
7. Testimonials and Program Communications
From time to time, BASIL may invite participants to share their experience with the program — through written testimonials, brief interviews, or participation in program communications and promotional materials.
This is always optional. We will never publish your name, photo, or words in connection with the program without your prior written consent. If you do consent, you may withdraw that consent at any time by contacting the BASIL Mentorship Team at [contact email], and we will not use your materials in new publications going forward.
By participating in the program, you understand that general, anonymized information about program participation, such as aggregate figures on sessions held, participants enrolled, or fields represented, may be shared publicly as part of BASIL's reporting on the program's reach and impact.
8. Privacy
Your personal information is collected and used solely to administer the BASIL Virtual Mentorship Program. We do not sell your information to third parties.
For full details on how your data is collected, stored, and used, please refer to the Privacy Policy.
9. Disclaimer
The BASIL Virtual Mentorship Program is offered as a community resource. While we work thoughtfully to create a valuable experience for all involved, BASIL and Konseye/Amaryllis Sage LLC make no guarantee of specific outcomes from participation, including employment, professional advancement, or networking results.
